'Glitch' Forces Hatem Bridge To Suspend Video Toll Notices: MDTA

The Hatem Bridge tolling facility is having technical difficulties, again, officials say.

Some drivers taking the Hatem Bridge have been getting double billed. Those impacted are E-ZPass users enrolled in the Hatem Bridge Discount Plan.

Because of a software glitch, the video tolls were sending notices to drivers who had already paid their fare through the discount plan, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority. The malfunction occurred during the transition to a new 3G tolling system on the Hatem Bridge, officials said.

The notice of erroneous video toll bills comes about two months after a separate software malfunction resulted in drivers getting speeding notices in the mail by mistake.

"We are working with both our current contractor and the new 3G tolling system contractor to identify why this is occurring and, in the meantime, we have suspended all Video Toll billing notices at the Hatem Bridge until further notice," the Maryland Transportation Authority said in a statement Monday, Jan. 6, of the latest issue.

"If you are an active Hatem Discount Plan customer and received a Notice of Toll Due in the mail, please understand that you were billed in error," officials said. "These notices are being dismissed and you will not owe any money, so no further customer action is needed. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused our customers."
