To allow for work around the Hatem Bridge, various lane closures will be in effect from Monday, Oct. 19, through late November. Crews will make adjustments to the road and bridge as the state has shifted to all-electronic tolling, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

On US 40 east, one lane will be closed weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Closures may also continue overnight from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., officials say. The closures are expected to end Nov. 20.

On the westbound side of the bridge, authorities advise one lane will be closed continuously from Monday, Oct. 26, to Friday, Nov. 9.

The westbound part of the bridge will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday these days:

  • Friday, Oct. 30, to Monday, Nov. 2
  • Friday, Nov. 13, to Monday, Nov. 16
  • Friday, Nov. 20, to Monday, Nov. 23

Closures will allow crews to remove the existing toll plaza and build a new system to support all-electronic tolling operations west of the Hatem Bridge.

Drivers will be directed to take MD 222 north to Interstate 95 south to the exit for MD 155 to Route 40 west.

Eastbound Route 40 traffic will be shifted onto westbound Route 40 at the Ohio Street and Otsego Street intersection and back onto eastbound Route 40 at MD 222 intersection.

All lane closures and work are weather permitting, authorities say.
