Auto Enthusiants Gather, Draw National Television Attention

It's uncommon to see a Lamborghini, an Audi and a Ford parked next to one another for a car show but that'll be the scene this Saturday in Hunt Valley.

Hunt Valley Horsepower, a community of automotive enthusiasts, will gather at Hunt Valley Town Center from 8-10 a.m. for their largest event of the summer. The group, organized by Rich Williams, meets at the shopping center every Saturday morning but this week's event is special.

For starters, Motorweek, the weekly PBS auto magazine show will be on hand to film a spot about the club, according to Williams.

"It's going to be all cars ... all marks, all generations," Williams said. "That applies to the people too."

Williams said that the loosely-knit Hunt Valley Horsepower community is about 1,600 strong and consists of people from all walks of life and all age groups.

"The youngest just got learners permits, the oldest gentleman is 93," Williams said. "The credo [is] if you love your car truck or SUV you’re invited."

Interest from Motorweek isn't the only thing special about this week's event, which ties in with the opening of a nearby NAPA Auto Parts superstore.

According to the group's website there will also be a "fresh-out-of-the-factory, 1-of-69 COPO Camaro," a Lexus LFA Supercar, a Ferrari 360 Challenge Race Car, a 76 NY Int'l Auto Show Porsche Turbo Carrera, a Porsche Carrera GT, and a '66 Ferrari 275 GTS Pininfarina for gearheads to check out.

"There will be many special one-off cars you’d never see outside a museum, and everybody in between," Williams said.

One of those special one-offs? A 1927 Spade Carillo Ford Roadster, according to the site "the fastest roadster at the Bonneville Salt Flats meet in 1951 with a one-way pass at 178 mph."

The group is also collecting donations for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund.

"It’s about respect for the automotive enthusiast community and the community as a whole," Willaims said. "You’re bringing folks together under one common love, why not elevate that community for the overall good of the larger community."

If that's not enough, the group will receive a police escort from Hunt Valley Town Center to the grand opening of the NAPA Auto Parts superstore on Gilroy Road, Williams said.

There will be food, giveaways, a car contest and a chance to meet two-time Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip.
