How do Maryland Schools Rank Against Other States?

A new study by WalletHub ranks Maryland lower than studies in the past.


Maryland’s education system has traditionally ranked high in the nation, even placing No. 1 for five straight years in rankings by a national education newspaper.

But the education system that reigned in the top tier of states has been bumped down to No. 14 in a new compilation released by WalletHub. The ranking focused on analyzing 12 key points, including student-teacher ratios, dropout rates, test scores and bullying incident rates.

Education Week, a national education newspaper ranked Maryland as the No. 1 state for education from 2009 to 2013, but a new ranking system in 2014 also brought Maryland down from its throne. This year, states were given letter grades in all categories, according to a previous Patch story. In every category, Maryland received a “B” -- no other state earned higher.

But according to the study done by WalletHub, Maryland’s education system ranks 14th overall, 16 in school system quality alone and 27 in education output and safety. Maryland also tied with New Hampshire for second place in highest reading test scores.

Maryland received heavy competition from Massachusetts in the past, according to Patch.

Massachusetts ousted Maryland in the WalletHub study, taking the No. 2 ranking overall, following New Jersey.
