City Treasurer Resigns

The search for a new treasurer for the city of Hyattsville began last night as the Hyattsville City Council voted to unanimously accept the resignation of former treasurer Elaine Stookey.

Stookey submitted a letter of resignation to city elected officials late Friday afternoon. Her resignation comes in the wake of a serious crisis at city hall over the city's failure to submit to state officials completed financial audits for almost the last three years. Her resignation also follows the resignation of city administrator Jerry Schiro, hired back in April. 

The failure to submit audits could have serious consequences for the city, including the loss of state and federal funds and the loss of the city charter, the document which gives the city local governing power. 

The council unanimously accepted Stookey's resignation without discussion, passed as part of the meeting's consent agenda.

The city council also passed measures granting soon-to-be-departing city administrator Jerry Schiro powers necessary to conduct the city's financial business over the next two months which he will be remaining on the job.
