Thousands Raised in Rooftop Fundraiser

Police camp out on doughnut shop rooftop in Mount Rainier to raise funds for Special Olympics Maryland.

By a little after midnight Sunday morning, members of local law enforcement agencies perched on a local rooftop had raised more than $2,700 for Special Olympics Maryland. 

The event, Cops on Rooftops, saw members of the Hyattsville City Police Department ascend to the roof of the Duncan Donuts at 3030 Queens Chapel Road in Mount Rainier to raise funds. 

Police began their elevated fundraiser at 6 a.m. on Saturday morning. The fundraiser will continue until noon a.m. today.

By midnight Saturday, four Hyattsville police officers, including Chief Doug Holland, were getting settled in for the night on the roof. With temperatures hovering in the low-to-mid 50s the police were preparing themselves for a not-too-frigid evening taking in the view of Mount Rainier's Queen's Chapel corridor.

Last year's local Cops on Rooftops fundraiser, held in August, netted more than $5,000 for Special Olympics Maryland.
