GAITHERSBURG, MD — Hundreds of full-size American flags will fly during Memorial Day weekend in a Field of Honor located at Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg, according to a news release.
In 2015, the Rotary Clubs of Montgomery Village and Gaithersburg mounted a huge display, of 750 large American flags, on the lawn at Bohrer Park on Route 355. This year, they will make the event even more festive with music and activities as part of the opening ceremony.

The two Rotary clubs are inviting organizations and groups to sponsor flags to honor their heroes, who can be current or former members of the armed forces, firefighters, police officers, or anyone else who is a hero to the sponsor. Each flag will bear a medallion with the names of the sponsor and his or her hero.
Members of the Rotary Clubs will put up the flags on May 27, and they will fly until the late afternoon hours on May 30. An opening ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on May 28.

Rotary is both one of the largest and most influential international humanitarian organizations and a network of community volunteers. Founded in Chicago in 1905, it now has more than 1.2 million members in some 33,000 clubs, in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Also, it has “Rotaract” clubs for men and women of college age and “Interact” clubs in high schools.
The clubs carry out fundraising activities and conduct projects to address humanitarian challenges including illiteracy, disease, hunger, poverty, lack of clean water and environmental concerns. Also, members of each club work in their communities by providing dictionaries for young students, building playgrounds that are accessible to children with disabilities, helping with food programs and in many other ways meeting the needs of their respective local community.
The Rotary Clubs of Montgomery Village and Gaithersburg join other Rotary clubs around the country in celebrating Memorial Day.
