Traffic Alert: Lanes Closed Overnight on Capital Beltway in Bethesda Area

Emergency repairs on a bridge deck mean lanes will be closed on the outer loop of Interstate 495.

Emergency bridge deck repairs will close some lanes on the outer loop of the Capital Beltway over MD 185 in the Bethesda area starting Thursday night, according to state highway officials.

If weather permits, the State Highway Administration will temporarily close traffic lanes on the outer loop of I-495 (Capital Beltway) over MD 185 (Connecticut Avenue, exit 34) for emergency bridge deck repairs. The closures will happen each weeknight until all repairs are completed.

  • a single left lane at 9 p.m.
  • two lanes at 10 p.m.
  • three lanes at 11 p.m.
  • three lanes will remain closed overnight and will reopen no later than 5 a.m. each day.

Crews will perform emergency concrete deck work on the bridge above MD 185. The need for the repair was discovered through a routine maintenance inspection, officials say.
