Winter In Montgomery Village May Already Be Over

MONTGOMERY VILLAGE, MD — It's been a lousy winter this season for snow lovers in the Montgomery Village area. After the region got a mere 3.4 inches of snow last year, early forecasts of 11 to 19 inches this winter seemed to many like a nice change.

So far, though, this winter has been just as big a snowfall bust as last winter. And while it's still mid-February, the chances for any decent snowfall may have already passed us by.

It certainly isn't likely to snow anytime soon, and we're already halfway through the month. Temperatures will soar to 70 degrees and perhaps beyond Thursday, despite the fact that it's usually coldest and snowiest this time of year in the D.C. area, according to the Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang.

There's a whisper of a hint of a possibility of snow Saturday afternoon and into the evening, but CWG says not to bet on it.

Another point to keep in mind is that the fall forecasts predicting above-average snowfall for the D.C. area projected January to have the best chance of snow, not February or March. That was because January was supposed to be much colder than average, while February was projected to be about average and March above average. So that throws even more cold water (or warm water, perhaps) on the idea that we might still get snow.

But again, there's a long way to go until the official end of winter on March 20. And March snowfalls in this area aren't unusual. In fact, just last year the early blooming cherry blossoms were severely damaged by a sudden frost.

So there is still time, but it's not looking good. (Or, it's looking great if you can't stand the white stuff and don't know what people in this area get all worked up about.)
