See Where Baltimore Ranks on List of Nation's Most Dangerous Cities For Drivers

And, read about what makes these cities so much more dangerous than the rest of the country.

Nerdwallet.com recently released its list of the safest and most dangerous cities in the U.S. for drivers, and Baltimore, Maryland made the list.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Baltimore made the latter list, ranking as the third most dangerous city in the country for drivers.

Baltimore ranked behind only Detroit, Michigan and Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

According to Nerdwallet's study, there are 4.7 fatal accidents for every 100,000 people in Baltimore, not even accounting for accidents that led to only serious injury or property damage.

Thanks to its high ranking on the most-dangerous list, Baltimore has one of the highest auto insurance rates in the country as well. The average driver pays $1,868 per year for insurance.

Other factors that led to the rankings: The number of reported vehicle thefts and break-ins each year, which obviously add to the price of insurance as well.

Not surprisingly, larger cities proved to have higher risks of fatal accidents and vehicle thefts and break-ins. The average large city on the list had nearly double the population of any smaller cities on the list.

Perhaps more interesting, though, is the fact that southern cities and cities on the East Coast tended to be more dangerous. Sixty-five percent of the cities on Nerdwallet's most dangerous list were located in the South or on the East Coast. Conversely, 60 percent of the safest-cities list were located in the West or Mid-West.

In particular, the study indicated that Baltimore residents go a shorter number of years between accidents than the average U.S. resident--only 4.7 years.

Nerdwallet said the data for their study was gleaned from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Allstate Insurance, NeighborhoodScout, and original research by Nerdwallet's staff.
