Acquisition Of Land For New School In Odenton Moves Ahead

Anne Arundel County Executive Pittman has introduced a resolution that paves the way to purchase a 37.5-acre parcel of land near Odenton.

ODENTON, MD — The process of purchasing a 37.5-acre parcel of land near Odenton for a new school has taken another step forward after Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman introduced Resolution 3-20. The property, located at 1127 Bragers Rd., has been pinpointed as the location for the new elementary school and future recreational facilities.

Funding for the land was included in the fiscal year 2020 budget as part of the advance land acquisition fund, which is typically allocated to purchase land for schools or other essential county facilities. The parcel is located near the Two Rivers subdivision in Odenton. The county negotiated a price of $1,092,500 for the land, compared with the seller’s appraised value of $4,360,000.

“This area has seen a tremendous amount of growth and we must ensure our schools do not continue to be overcrowded,” said Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman in a statement. “This acquisition will allow us to build a new school in this growing area and provide much-needed recreational uses for the community.”

Since the land will be purchased using advance land acquisition funds, the county conducted a feasibility study as required by code. The study was submitted along with Resolution 3-20 and considers the zoning, soils, topography and other physical characteristics of the site. The study recommends a 600-student school and future recreational uses. A conceptual diagram is included in the study.
