Update: Man Critical After Attempting Suicide in Police Holding Cell

Les Ronnie Tirschman, 51, of Annapolis was being held at the Western District police station when officers found him trying to hang himself with his shirt. He was transported to the shock trauma center in Baltimore.

Original Article: A 51-year old man was in critical condition at the shock trauma center in Baltimore Sunday morning after county police officers found him trying to hang himself in a holding cell at Western District headquarters in Odenton.

According to a press release from Anne Arundel County Police, officers had arrested the man Saturday afternoon after they determined he had assaulted his live-in girlfriend in Annapolis.

Police transported the man to the Western District police station on Telegraph Road, where he was booked and told to wait for a court appearance.

Later Saturday, deputies from the county Sheriff's Department brought in a second prisoner. While bringing the second prisoner to a holding cell, they saw the 51-year-old man trying to hang himself with his own shirt.

The deputies tried to resusicitate the man, and also called officials from the fire department for help. Emergency crews transported the man to the University of Maryland's shock trauma center, and as of early Sunday morning, the man was in critical condition.
