ODENTON, MD--National Pet Day was founded in 2006 to celebrate the animals already bringing joy to our lives and to bring attention to the ones still waiting for the opportunity, according to PetDayUSA.com.

A 2015-2016 APPA survey estimates that 65 percent of U.S. households own a pet and the 2012 AVMA Sourcebook claims that 63.2 percent of those pet owners think of their furry friends as family.

That number isn’t hard to imagine considering the unconditional love and loyalty dogs, cats, and even birds and reptiles, give away freely. There’s even a dog named Dagger selling his art for charity!

If you’re part of the 35 percent without a four-legged companion, the Maryland SPCA has a whole crew of pets waiting for their forever homes. This month is also the organization’s annual March for the Animals, which benefits more than 15,000 homeless pets.
