On October 13, 2020, Ashleigh Shannon-Flemion of the Odenton Volunteer Fire Company (OVFC), received the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services (MIEMSS) Clinician of the Year Award. The award was presented by Dr. Delbridge, Executive Director for MIEMSS.

Ashleigh joined the OVC in May 2018, after completing the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Basic course at the Anne Arundel County Community College (AACC). After joining the OVFC, she completed the other required training courses, including Hazardous Materials Operations and Emergency Vehicle Operations in order to be cleared as an ambulance aid and driver. She is now enrolled in the AACC Paramedic Program and has already completed all the requirements to be licensed as an Emergency Medical Technician – Intermediate.

Ashleigh is a regular member of the Saturday night ambulance crew. She also regularly serves extra duty nights to ensure that the ambulance is staffed and ready to meet our community’s needs. Ashleigh responded on 218 emergency medical calls in 2019, after being cleared to ride in March. Ashleigh is one of OVFC’s most dependable and reliable members. As an active EMT with the company, she helps out regularly to make sure the ambulance is fully stocked with the necessary medical supplies and ready for the next response. Because of her demonstrated skills, the OVFC selected Ashleigh as one of the mentors to work with new EMT candidates to get the required ride-a-longs and patient assessments to complete their EMT course qualifications. She also serves as a preceptor for new EMTs who are working on their riding clearance process.

Ashleigh never fails to pitch in when a work assignment is required and is one of the first to volunteer for special assignments. In her service tenure with the fire company, she has become a role model for other members to follow as they begin their emergency service careers. The OVFC is very proud to have members who have the dedication and drive that she exhibits.
