HANOVER, MD — Seven people went to area hospitals for a check after an odor forced a Spirit Airlines plane to return to Baltimore-Washington International Airport Wednesday, according to the Anne Arundel County Fire Department. There is no word on whether any of the passengers were admitted or their status.

The flight from BWI to Fort Lauderdale took off about 7 a.m. then declared an alert for "major difficulties," and asked to return to the airport at 7:20 a.m., The Baltimore Sun reports. Crews from Anne Arundel and the BWI Marshall Airport Fire and Rescue Department were on hand to help.

The plane landed without problem at BWI and taxied to a gate, airport spokesman Jonathan Dean told the Sun. Seven passengers were taken to the hospital as a precaution after experiencing the unknown odor, he said.
