BCPS Receives 2017 National School Library of the Year Program Recognition

From BCPS: One reason why Baltimore County Public Schools library program was named the 2017 National School Library Program of the Year might be because BCPS library media specialists never stop reaching out to and supporting students – even during the summer. This year, 22 BCPS elementary school libraries are offering summer hours during which students can check out books, write stories, use computers, and engage in makerspace and other activities.

Library media specialist Shelle Schnell of Seneca Elementary School has even created a mobile school library to serve students who cannot easily get to the school or a public library branch. The “mobile library” held its first hours on July 5 at the Whispering Woods apartment and townhouse complex. Aided by her son, Schnell took books and her scanner so that any BCPS student who visited could check out materials. Seneca Principal Jason Feiler and Assistant Principal Lauren Stuart collected additional non-BCPS books to be shared with non-students and adults interested in something new to read. The mobile library will be repeated at Whispering Woods from 2:30 – 4 p.m. on Wednesdays, July 19, andAug. 2. To reward participants, Seneca gear will be raffled off, and there will be some school supply giveaways on July 19. Summer hours at Dogwood, Martin Boulevard, and Pleasant Plains elementary schools have already taken place. Here are summer hours at BCPS school libraries for the remainder of the summer.
