"Michael and his family, many of whom are in the fire department, define duty, honor and tradition," the Chestnut Ridge Volunteer Fire Company said in a statement. "The name 'Curtis' runs deep in the fire service. Michael was and will always be part of the bedrock of our foundation with roots to the deepest part of the earth, that is the fire department."

Because of the new coronavirus, officials said the funeral services would be private, for family only.
