Caregiver Guilty of Abusing Disabled Adult in Owings Mills Facility

A Baltimore man faces prison time and thousands in fines for abuse and assault.

A Baltimore man has been found guilty of abusing and assaulting a disabled adult in an Owings Mills facility.

Solomon Oscar Ankrah, 32, of Baltimore, faces up to 10 years in prison and a $2,500 fine for second-degree assault and five years in prison and a $5,000 fine for second-degree abuse of a vulnerable adult, according to a press release sent friday from Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler’s office.

A 28-year-old man testified during a two-day trial that Ankrah, who was working as a residential counselor, physically assaulted the man on Oct. 22, 2012. The 28-year-old is classified as a vulnerable adult, defined in Maryland as a person who lacks the physical or mental capacity to take care of his or her daily needs, according to the release.

The man testified that Ankrah attacked him after angrily demanding he clean his room. He testified that Ankrah hit him in the eye with a cable cord, a cut that took seven stitches to close. The man also suffered lacerations on his face and neck, and a fracture of the orbital area below the eye that required surgery, according to the release.

Ankrah, a citizen of Ghana, testified that he was working under a false name, Ali Aminu, because his visa had expired, according to the release. Sentencing is set for Tuesday, June 18.
