Franklin Indians Win State Football Championship For 2018

Franklin High School is home to the 2018 class 3A football champions.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — The Franklin Indians are the 2018 state football champions. The Indians brought home the trophy from the MPSSAA 3A state football championship on Thursday, Nov. 29.

The Indians beat the Linganore Lancers, 17-14, in the game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis.

The game was a nailbiter, with kicker Simon Spath scoring the winning field goal as time ran out on the clock to give the Indians the win, the Frederick News-Post reported.

Both teams had been 12-2 for the season, according to the newspaper, which quoted one of the Linganore players as saying the outcome was "really tough" and "really disappointing."

For Franklin High School, it marked the third state football title.

The Indians also won against the Lancers, albeit by a much larger margin, in 2013; that game was 20-7. Patch reported that was the first time the school won a football championship title since Franklin's football program started in 1967.

The Indians went on to win a second championship in 2014 against Damascus, knocking off the Hornets, 35-21.

In addition to 2013, the team made it to the championship in 2016 but fell to Damascus, 14-12.
