National Guardsman Killed In Flood Was Based In Reisterstown

Officials said that a military member based in Reisterstown died in the Ellicott City flood.

REISTERSTOWN, MD — The National Guardsman who died in the Ellicott City flood was reportedly based in Reisterstown. The service man who has been hailed as a hero was a sergeant assigned to Camp Frettard, the military reservation off Hanover Pike north of Reisterstown.

Eddison Alexander Hermond, 39, of Severn, was last seen at 5:20 p.m. in the parking lot behind La Palapa on Main Street in Ellicott City, Howard County police reported. He and others were helping a woman with a cat to escape when he went under and did not resurface, witnesses told officials.

Police confirmed around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday that the body of a man found on the Baltimore County side of the Patapsco River was Hermond.

"It's with a heavy heart that I order Maryland flags to fly at half-staff across the state in honor of Sergeant Eddison Hermond," Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said. "His service to our country, state, and local community will not soon be forgotten. Flags will return to full-staff sunset of the day he is laid to rest."
