Owings Mills Filmmaker Receives Standing Ovation
A Catholic University student from Owings Mills was celebrated for her film 'Token' about being black in predominantly white surroundings.

WASHINGTON, DC — A Catholic University media studies major reportedly received a standing ovation after her film "Token" was shown at the D.C. campus Friday night.
Filmmaker Marjan Koffa drew on her experiences as a black woman in predominantly white circles, including the time she spent growing up in Owings Mills, to create the 11-minute documentary for her senior thesis, according to Catholic University student newspaper The Tower.
The film featured clips from university roundtables about race as well as interviews with members of Catholic University's Black Student Alliance who shed light on the shortcomings of being considered a "token black friend" with black skin but who is not necessarily understood as a black person, the newspaper reported.
