Poke Fish Sushi​ Opens In Valley Village Shopping Center

OWINGS MILLS, MD — A Hawaiian-inspired casual restaurant is now open in the Valley Village Shopping Center. Poke Fish Sushi serves lunch and dinner featuring an array of dishes, from sushi rolls to hibachi-style meals.

The restaurant gets its name from "poke," the Hawaiian word for chunk.

While it offers many other dishes, the poke concept is one that has been catching on around the country.

Originally, poke was a dish in Hawaii made of tuna that was cubed and marinated, according to Food and Wine magazine, which reports that many other variations have shown up such as cubed avocado. And the experts say the word should be pronounced poh-KAY, rhyming with "okay."

To create a poke dish, diners at Poke Fish Sushi can select their ingredients accordingly:

• Base: sushi rice or brown rice in a bowl, burrito (seaweed wrap) or salad (kale or mixed greens)
• Protein: Ahi tuna, salmon, shrimp, chicken, crab, etc.
• Sauces and flavorings: sesame, Hawaiian, ginger, honey wasabi, sweet teriyaki, avocado, etc.
• Crunches: peanuts, almonds, Macadamia nuts, etc.
• Mix-ins: vegetables, fruits and seeds, etc.

There are pre-made poke dishes that people can select, such as the Umami classic bowl with Ahi tuna, salmon, cucumber, mixed green, kiwi, avocado, sweet corn, mango, nori strips and honey wasabi sauce; the green bowl with mixed greens, mango, apple, grape, avocado, edamame, cucumber, sesame seed, baby tomato and sesame sauce; or the house burrito, which comes with fresh salmon, tuna, yellowtail, scallion, cucumber, avocado, asparagus and coriander sauce. Besides poke dishes, additional offerings are hibachi-style dinners with shrimp, chicken, beef, scallops or tofu; Japanese-style noodle dishes with Ramen or Udon noodles; deep-fried rolls; and signature burritos filled with fish, tempura chicken or vegetables. There are staples like sushi rolls, miso soup, dumplings and other items too.

Options are available for online ordering and takeout, in addition to dining inside the restaurant.
