Here are ways to avoid coming into contact with rabies:

  • To stay safe, know there is a risk of getting rabies or other diseases from interacting with any animal. Consider these risks if your household includes the elderly, people with illnesses, children or other pets.
  • Avoid contact with stray or feral animals, particularly those that appear sick. "There is no risk-free contact with these animals with regard to physical injury, rabies and other diseases," officials said.
  • Do not leave food or water outside overnight and/or for extended periods if you feed your pets outdoors.
  • Ensure vaccinations are up to date.
  • Talk to a veterinarian before adopting stray or feral cats.
