Ray Rice, 29, was a three-time Pro Bowler who played six seasons as a running back for the Ravens prior to his contract termination in September 2014.

In the Baltimore area, Ray Rice was known for his community service, specifically involving children.

When he was charged with assault in the domestic incident in New Jersey, individuals and organizations sent approximately 30 letters to the District Attorney’s Office there detailing his acts of kindness, from helping to fund a child’s funeral to making kids who are ”typically cast aside ... feel welcome and special,” according to CBS Sports. He appeared regularly in schools and on local football fields in the community.

Last fall, the Rices returned to Baltimore to donate uniforms to local cheerleaders.

Since moving north, Ray Rice has continued his work with young people, sharing about how his experiences can be used to educate. At the end of February, he told youths in Elizabeth, N.J., about the importance of hard work and mentorship, according to NJ.com. A bishop at the event who has reportedly been a mentor to the football star told the news outlet that "...football is not the end-all for him now. He gets along with children" and "does a great job with the youth."

Since the Feb. 15 , 2014, incident at the Revel Casino in Atlantic City, N.J., Rice has done a pretrial intervention program for first-time offenders.

And these days, Ray Rice is training future NFL stars who are hoping to make the draft, Sports Illustrated reports, though he hopes to get back in the game himself, stating: "I have a lot of finishing to do."
