Severe Thunderstorm Warning Expires

The severe thunderstorm warning called for potentially damaging winds.

MARYLAND — A severe thunderstorm warning has expired in central Maryland. The warning ended at 8:30 a.m.


PREVIOUS REPORT (EXPIRED): A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for several counties in central Maryland calling for 60 mph wind gusts.

Roads may become blocked by downed trees, and localized power outages are possible, according to the warning. There may be extremely heavy rain, small hail and gusty winds, officials said.

"If driving, you should be prepared for a sudden sharp drop in visibility and slippery roads," the National Weather Service reported. "The heaviest showers and storms should move through the immediate DC and Baltimore areas within the next hour, with lighter rain expected after 830 a.m."

Before 8 a.m., radar detected a severe thunderstorm near Damascus that was moving east at 50 mph, according to the warning.

The severe thunderstorm warning is in effect until 8:30 a.m. Friday and applies to the following:

  • Baltimore County
  • Carroll County
  • Howard County
  • Montgomery County

During the severe thunderstorm warning period, people should go inside to stay safe and move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.

Do not drive underneath wooded areas until the threat has passed, as trees and branches may fall.

These locations may be affected, according to the National Weather Service: Columbia, Olney, Pikesville, Historic Ellicott City, Ellicott City, Catonsville, Woodlawn, Randallstown, Owings Mills, Eldersburg, Milford Mill, Reisterstown, Lochearn, Arbutus, Redland, Sykesville, Oakland, Ilchester, Garrison and Highland.
