Coordinated by Brendan Penn, a STEM teacher at Lyons Mill and the 2018-2019 BCPS Teacher of the Year, the STEM Expo is part of the Maryland STEM Festival, which extends from Oct. 11 – Nov. 10.

Presenters can display at tables, offer small group activities (15-20 minute rotations), or mount small or large group presentations. Participation is free for presenters and a light breakfast and lunch will be provided. Presenters are sought related to the following subject areas: career and technical education, computer science, English for Speakers of Other Languages, global history, health and physical education, language arts/literacy, mathematics, music, science, social studies, STEM, special education, and world languages and cultures. The application for presenters is available online.

In a 2018 Fun with Maryland STEM Festival podcast, Penn shared that the vision for the Expo is “to connect students and families with STEM professionals. If a student is interested in video games or robotics, I want them to actually meet the creators, the designers, the people who are actually in the weeds creating the things that they are interested in so that they [the students] could highlight those skills as they go through middle school and high school... We want to spread the word as much as we can to get organizations, companies, and volunteer groups to really engage with our students and open up their eyes to all the possibilities in STEM in the real world.”

Some of the sessions presented at the 2018 STEM Expo included:

  • Chemistry in Action, Slime Station
  • Chess Tournament
  • Civil/Structural Engineering Building Station
