Stevenson University Cancels In-Person Classes

The university with a campus in Owings Mills is transitioning to remote learning amid concerns about the new coronavirus.

OWINGS MILLS, MD — Starting Wednesday, Stevenson University will be canceling face-to-face classes. It has also canceled co-curricular events through March 28.

The university issued the guidance Tuesday based on "advice from public health agencies and higher education organizations in our region," according to a statement from Stevenson University President Elliot Hirshman.

The University System of Maryland, which includes 12 universities and three higher learning centers, advised students Tuesday to be prepared for two weeks off campus after its spring break, as the number those who tested positive for the new coronavirus increased in Maryland.

Stevenson University, which has campuses in Greenspring and Owings Mills, canceled in-person classes from Wednesday to Friday this week.

By Saturday, Stevenson students are expected to leave campus unless they have asked for an extension from university housing officials. They should take all essentials — including medications, laptops and other devices needed for remote learning — "in the event we need to restrict access to campus in the future," Hirshman said.
