Susan Taylor Powers, 89, Equestrian Extraordinaire

Susan Taylor Powers, 89, previously of Pocock Road in Monkton, died Sunday morning, Jan. 22, 2017, at Lorien Mays Chapel in Timonium, where she had been a resident since August. Miss Powers was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, on July 20, 1927, the daughter of Ralph A. Powers and Bernice Taylor Powers.
She is survived by her half- brother Ralph A. Powers, Jr., her niece Lorrie LaCour Guiza and her husband Michael; her nephew Nicholas T. LaCour; her nephews John E. Humphreville and his wife Susan, Richard L. Humphreville, Edward T. Humphreville and his wife Constance, and Robert A. Humphreville; her nieces Joan H. Fitzgibbon and her husband John and Ellen H. McGuire and her husband James. She was predeceased by her sisters Nancy P. LaCour and Joan P. Humphreville, her step-sisters Mary F. Brower and Helen F. Summers, and her nephews Crawford E. Hindermann, Charles M. LaCour, Jonathan P. LaCour, and Peter A. LaCour.
Miss Powers graduated from Garrison Forest School in Owings Mills, and Pine Manor College in Brookline, Massachusetts. She also attended an equestrian academy in England.

As a riding instructor, she taught at Garrison Forest School and Oldsfields School in Baltimore. For more than 40 years, she was involved with the Elkridge Harford Hunt Club and the Elkridge Harford Pony Club. In her years of teaching, she won numerous blue ribbons and presidential awards. Those who knew her remember Miss Powers as a dedicated riding instructor and a lover and protector of animals, including her dog Sophie and her cat Jethro.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, Jan. 30, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 232 St. Thomas Lane, Owings Mills, MD 21117, beginning at 11 a.m. Donations in Susan’s name may be made to either Elkridge Harford Pony Club or Jarrettsville Veterinary Center, care of Lori Knopp, 1336 Knopp Road, Jarrettsville, MD 21084.
