The Dog Days of Summer End with National Dog Day

Here's an official reason to spoil your pooch this week.

August 26 is officially National Dog Day -- a day to celebrate the furriest members of our families.

National Dog Day was started in 2004 to recognize the shelter pets looking for a good home and to encourage their adoption, according to The Huffington Post.

Want to adopt a dog in Baltimore County? Check out the Baltimore County Humane Society for animals available for adoption.

Want to do something special for your pooch to celebrate National Dog Day? Here are two ideas:

  • Make a doggie play date. Check out these dog-inspired "meetups" at local parks and open areas. Don't see one that meets your needs? Start your own. Just post what you're looking for (friendly dogs in the Owings Mills area to meet and catch frisbees on Saturday afternoons, for example). Find more here.
  • Take the dog for a swim at the pool! The Owings Mills Newtown Community Association is hosting the Doggie Paddle 2013 - a pool party for the pooches - on Sept. 3 from 5 until 7:30 p.m. Get the details here.
Show off your dog -- email your favorite pooch photo to kym.byrnes@patch.com to help us build the Owings Mills Patch Furry Friend Photo Gallery. Don't forget to tell us a little about the dog -- name, breed, age, etc..
