Trial Begins For Police Officer Accused of Killing Randallstown Teen

James Laboard faces two counts of manslaughter in the 2012 asphyxiation death of Christopher Brown.

The trial of a Baltimore County Police Officer accused of killing a 17-year-old Randallstown boy began Monday in Towson.

James David Laboard, an off-duty police officer, was indicted nearly a year ago by a Baltimore County grand jury on two counts of manslaughter related to the death of Christopher Brown. Laboard has been free on bail while awaiting trial.

Both charges are felonies and carry maximum prison sentences of 10 years.
Brown died June 13,2012 of asphyxiation, according to a state medical examiner's report.

Laboard is accused of chasing Brown, 17, down after someone threw a paving stone at a door to his Randallstown home, about a block away from where Brown lived.

Police said Laboard found Brown hiding in some bushes. The two struggled with each other. That fight ultimately lead to the teen's death, according to police.
