OWINGS MILLS, MD — While New Year's Day is often a day to recover from the previous night's festivities, if you do plan to head out, be aware the holiday may affect the hours of area government offices, schools, public transportation and more.

Baltimore County Government: Offices are open New Year's Eve, but are closed New Year's Day.

Baltimore County Health Department: Closed Jan. 1.

Baltimore County Courts: All county courts are closed New Year's Day.

Maryland State Courts: All state courts are closed Jan. 1.

Post Offices: Closed Jan. 1. No mail will be delivered.

Baltimore County Public Schools: Closed Dec. 21-Jan. 1 for winter break. Classes resume Thursday.

Baltimore County Library: All locations will close at 5:30 p.m. New Year's Eve and will remain closed through New Year's Day.

CountyRide: No services New Year's Day.

MTA: On Jan. 1, Light RailLink, Local & CityLink and Metro Subway will operate on a Sunday/Holiday schedule. Light rail and subway services will operate for one hour after the New Year's Eve fireworks display in Baltimore. Regular operating hours will resume Thursday.

Parking: Metered parking is free Jan. 1.

Senior Centers: Open New Year's Eve, closed New Year's Day.

Trash/Recycling: There will be no pickup New Year's Day. The impact of holidays varies among Baltimore County collection schedules. See your schedule. If you contract with private provider, confirm schedule changes with the provider.

Landfills/Recycling Centers: Trash and recycling drop-off facilities, including the Eastern Sanitary Landfill in White Marsh, will be closed New Year's Day. All three drop-off facilities are open regular operating hours New Year's Eve.

Banks: Closed Jan. 1.

Movie Theaters: Most area movie theaters will be open New Year's Day. We would encourage calling your theater of choice to confirm hours.

Grocery Stores: Area grocery stores hours are as follows —

  • Giant Foods: All stores will close at 9 p.m. on New Year's Eve. All stores will be open regular hours on New Year's Day and pharmacies will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the exception of Catonsville and Bethesda, which will return to their regular 24-hour operation.
  • Wegmans Food Markets: Stores will close at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, and will reopen at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 1. Locations are open normal hours on New Year's Day.
  • Weis Markets: All stores will close at 9 p.m. on New Year's Eve. All pharmacies in Maryland and Virginia will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on New Year's Eve. All stores will observe regular store hours on New Year's Day. All pharmacies in Maryland and Virginia will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on New Year's Day.
  • Safeway: Open regular store hours on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
  • Food Lion: Most stores are open regular hours on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
  • Aldi: New Year's Eve: All stores will open with limited hours (use the store locator for hours at your location). New Year's Day, Jan. 1: Closed.
  • Trader Joe's: New Year's Eve: All stores close at 6 p.m. New Year's Day: Closed.
  • Walmart: Most stores open regular hours on both Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
  • Target: New Year's Eve: Stores open at 7 a.m. but closing times may vary. New Year's Day: Open normal hours.
