Pine Grove Middle Students Turn Trash Into Art

Seventh graders at the school recently created a mosaic out of bottle caps after saving the items for months.

You know what they say about one man's trash.

That's right, it's another middle schooler's art project.

Kids at Pine Grove Middle School recently created a mosaic out of bottle caps as part of an effort to "upcycle," according to art teacher Vernon Fains.

Upcycling is the process of turning trash into art, and seventh grade art students in the gifted & talented and portfolio preparation programs did just that, turning "well over 1,000" bottle caps into a mural that represents the four seasons, according to an email from Fains.

The piece, which is installed in the school's common area, represents hours of planning and assembly; not to mention months of saving bottle caps (and drinking the bottles' contents.)

"It is inspiring to see our students collaborate and create something beautiful and meaningful,” Fains wrote.

The mural isn't the only collaborative project that Fains' students have been working on.

Kids also recently participated in The Circle Project, a collaborative art movement where painters work on an 8-10 inch square creating their own representation of a circle.

The square is meant to represent each person's equal share in the community, while the circle represents the community itself and the colors celebrate the beauty of individuality and diversity. Read more about The Circle Project here.

"My students were excited about the idea that they were going to be a part of something bigger than themselves and that they were free to explore materials and methods to support their own visions," Fains wrote.
