2 Celebrity Dogs Coming To The Avenue At White Marsh

The Avenue at White Marsh will host a walk and race for pets and their people on Sunday, benefiting America's VetDogs.

WHITE MARSH, MD — The Avenue at White Marsh will host two celebrity dogs during a special event Sunday morning. Sully, the former service dog to the for the late President George H.W. Bush, and Camden, WBAL’s service-dog-in-training, will be cheering on participants in the America's VetDogs Run & Dog Walk off Honeygo Boulevard.

The opening ceremonies will be at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 28, emceed by WBAL-TV anchor Jason Newton.

A 5K timed race and 2-mile dog walk will follow, before an awards ceremony and guest speaker close out the day.

VetDogs graduate and U.S. Marine Corps veteran Alex van Breukelen will speak about the life-changing difference his service dog has made.

He received Tara, his Labrador retriever service dog, in 2016 after retiring from the Marines and spending time in Kosovo, Djibouti, Africa, as well as the initial assault into Iraq.

"It is a lifelong journey that I am on, and having Tara by my side has allowed me to focus on what is in the ‘here and now,’ and not worry about the past or dwell on the future," van Breukelen said in a statement.

Training a service dog costs more than $50,000, according to America's VetDogs, which provides the service for free to veterans. Support comes from private contributions, fraternal clubs and fundraisers, such as Sunday's event in White Marsh.

The America's Vet Dogs Run & Walk will take place from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 28, on The Avenue at White Marsh, 8125 Honeygo Blvd, Nottingham, MD 21236.
