Men Posing as BGE Employees Attempt Burglary

Police are warning Perry Hall residents that daytime deception burglaries tend to tick upward in the summer.

Three men posing as BGE crew members tried to rob an 89-year-old Perry Hall man in the first reported deception burglary of the summer, Baltimore County police reports show.

One of the three men distracted the senior homeowner, walking him down to the basement. An accomplice meanwhile let himself inside and began looking around, according to the report.

The incident occurred at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 22, in the 4200 block of Silver Spring Road.

Nothing was reported missing or stolen, although police are still investigating the incident. It was reported that the two men left in a maroon color SUV driven by a third man.

Lt. Ron Brooks, of the White Marsh Precinct, said reports of deception burglaries of this kind tend to tick upward in warm weather months.

Residents should be wary of door-to-door solicitors offering home improvement, auto repair, landscaping work, Brooks said.

“Reputable companies don’t go door to door,” Brooks said. “That’s a red flag right there.”

That said, not all solicitors are burglars.

Anyone going door to door has to obtain a Huckster license from the county and cannot continue knocking on doors after 5 p.m. or sundown, which ever comes first, according to county law.

Deception burglars typically target older residents during the daytime. Brooks said if Perry Hall residents see anyone suspicious knocking on doors, to call 911.
