BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — A new stretch of Campbell Boulevard is coming to fruition. Officials said the latest installment runs from Bird River Road to US 40.

“This new stretch of road will better connect our neighborhoods and help improve quality of life for our residents," Council Chair Cathy Bevins said in a statement.

Construction on the 0.7-mile stretch of Campbell Boulevard began nearly two years ago, in fall 2018, officials said, and it is expected to open Tuesday.

"This long-awaited project is a major gain for eastern Baltimore County and will provide a convenient connection for residents that will reduce congestion, expand bike access, and improve street safety," County Executive Johnny Olszewski said in a statement.

Planners who helped design the Campbell Boulevard extension said the idea was to connect the commercial area of White Marsh with the residential areas in the eastern part of the county, while providing safer and more efficient routes for pedestrians and cyclists.

In all, the Campbell Boulevard extension project spans 3.1 miles. When complete, it will connect MD 7/Philadelphia Road to MD 43/White Marsh Boulevard.

The goal of the extension project is to improve safety on the road and relieve congestion at key intersections.

"The project’s completed second phase runs from US 40 to Bird River Road and intersects with the newly completed portion of Campbell Boulevard," according to Baltimore County government.

Creating a continuous circuit from US 40 to White Marsh Boulevard, the $10 million project was made possible by a $5 million county contribution and matching funds from a developer.

The last part of the project, which will begin in 2023, will run from MD 7 to US 40, including reconstructing the Mohrs Lane Bridge.
