Perry Hall Man Receives Prison Sentence For Tax Crimes

The owner of a Baltimore staffing company was ordered to pay more than $200,000 in unpaid taxes.

A Baltimore business owner has been sentenced to three months in prison for filing false tax returns—specifically, understating his income, according to a release from the Maryland U.S. States Attorney’s Office.

U.S. District Judge James K. Bredar ordered Perry Hall resident Jonas Purisch, 39,  to pay $210,019.04 in restitution to the IRS, as well as a $30,000 fine, the release states.

“Unlike Mr. Purisch, the vast majority of America’s taxpayers play by the rules and fulfill their tax obligations,” Thomas J. Kelly, Special Agent in Charge for IRS, said in a statement.  “IRS Criminal Investigation is committed to working with the US Attorney’s Office to bring to justice those, like Mr. Pursich, that intentionally do not report their correct income.”

Purisch owned JP Staffing Inc., a Baltimore-based company that provided temporary factory workers. The workers were paid in cash.

In 2006 and 2007, Purisch grossly understated the income from his staffing company, attempting to hide revenue in his personal bank accounts. In 2008 and 2009, Purisch didn’t file tax returns on income totaling $737,925.

According to the release, Purisch claimed that he only made $52,870 in 2006, when in fact he deposited $276,572 into his personal bank account. In 2007, Purisch again shortchanged the IRS, claiming $4,000 in a year that he made $375,158.

He made deposits of $457,499 and $280,426 in 2008 and 2009, respectively, although he did not file taxes for either year.

“The total tax loss in this case including interest on unpaid taxes is $210,019.04,” the release states.
