PERRY HALL, MD — Those looking to show gratitude to service members died defending our country have several opportunities in Perry Hall this year. Memorial Day is Monday, May 27, and there are multiple events centered around the holiday.
Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day and originated in the years following the Civil War. It became an official federal holiday in 1971, and many Americans observe it by visiting cemeteries or memorials, at family gatherings, and by participating in parades. It also marks the unofficial beginning of summer.

The Murph Challenge will raise money for the Navy SEAL Foundation and White Marsh Volunteer Fire Company. Participants in the event, which is co-sponsored by Perry Hall Crossfit, will pay $10 to compete. The challenge entails running, pushups and squats.
Signal 13 will perform a Memorial Day weekend show at El's County Line at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, at 12301 Philadelphia Road, in Kingsville.

The Memorial Day Ceremony to honor Maryland service members will take place at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 27, at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens, 200 East Padonia Road, in Timonium.
There will be a Memorial Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 27, at Fort Howard Veterans Park, 9105 North Point Road, in Edgemere. The Maryland Military Band will perform.
Overlea-Perry Hall Post #130 will hold its annual Memorial Day remembrance service at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 30, at the American Legion, 8666 Silver Lake Drive, in Perry Hall. There will be patriotic music by the Middle River Ancient Drums and Fifes as well as participation by Boy Scout Troop #124 and taps by Squadron 130 Sons of American Legion member Phil Gentile, according to organizers. All are welcome. There will be light refreshments such as hot dogs and hamburgers after the event. The lounge will be closed.
