Perry Hall Y Family Center to Celebrate Healthy Kids Day 2013

Get the kids moving and the parents won’t be far behind.

That's the idea behind the Y's annual Healthy Kids Day event. 

“I think it’s important that we stay ahead of the curve in setting the trends for healthy living. We’re letting people know that there are options and that we’re in it with them. We want to set the trajectory of their lives toward health and longevity,” Kelly Lepley, the Perry Hall Family Center director for the Y of Central Maryland, said.

Y facilities across the country are celebrating Healthy Kids Day 2013 on Saturday April 27, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“Healthy Kids Day is designed to facilitate an environment of health. We do a lot to get families involved and we care about the future of our children’s health,” Lepley said.  “It gives us a chance to get kids together and do some activities—obstacle course, games, crafts, healthy snacks.”

The Perry Hall Family Center has planned a day of games and other physical activities to get children excited about healthy living.

“Hopefully the weather will be better [than last year],” Lepley said. The center is bringing in a moon bounce that wouldn’t be much fun in the rain.

While physical activity is at the forefront of Healthy Kids Day, nutrition education remains in focus.

The Perry Hall Y’s camp team will teach kids how to make healthy trail mix while Medstar Franklin Square Hospital will lead a discussion on nutrition in general. Attendees can also learn how to grow their own vegetables with pro gardening tips.

The event will also feature a family yoga instructor and music and movement programs.

Lepley said the event is appropriate for kids between 2 and 11 years old. The event is free and open to all.

The Perry Hall Family Center Y is located at 4375 Ebenezer Rd.
