Three groups of people ran toward the derailed CSX train that rocked Rosedale Tuesday afternoon: police, firefighters and the brazen trying to get a closer look.

Eventually, police turned away a group of about 50 who had walked along the train tracks inching close to the smoking freight cars, but not before the group snapped and shot cell phone pictures and videos.

Police shut down Pulaski Highway from Chesaco Avenue headed east toward the city line. Firefighters and hazmat crews kept smoking freight cars at bay. A police helicopter landed on Pulaski Highway to lend support.

The billowing black smoke streaked across the Baltimore skyline and was expected to do so for hours, Baltimore County Fire Chief John Hohman said.

County firefighters were working with CSX to determine the most effective method of extinguishing the fire late Tuesday, Hohman added.

From the national and foreign media to local news, the crash, derailment and subsequent fire turned all eyes on Rosedale.
