Visions for Vacancies: Who Should Move in at Perry Hall Square?

The Perry Hall Square shopping center was only 60 percent filled in 2011, when there was space for 24 active businesses. Two years later, the center is 80 percent filled.
One vacant storefront, located next door to stands out in an otherwise fully populated strip facing Ebenezer Road.Â

The shopping center has benefited in recent years from a business revitalization district designation, imposed by Councilman David Marks.
The designation affords businesses county assistance and free training programs. Businesses in the area that qualify can obtain loans for up to $30,000 for structural renovations and free architectural consulting.

In addition, Marks said the shopping center has seen a turnaround since Giant Food moved in in 2012.
"What you have now is a lot more foot traffic," Marks said. "I'm pretty happy about that."
