County Announces Relaunch of Opioid Intervention Team 

Elkton, MD: Cecil County Executive Danielle Hornberger announced today the reestablishment of the Opioid Intervention Team (OIT) and tasked the team with the creation of a County-specific strategic plan to combat opioid abuse.

The OIT will draft a strategic plan based on the reports from the Opioid Transition Committee and the Pandit Group, from information gathered from stakeholders at the Opioid Summit, and from constituent input. This strategic plan will provide the County Administration, and its community partners, with actionable tasks that can be taken to reduce opioid abuse in Cecil County.

“The Opioid Summit allowed us to gain perspective on where we are as a County and what barriers we currently face. Now, it is time to take what we have learned and generate a strategic plan that creates a more cohesive response to the opioid crisis”, stated County Executive Hornberger.

• Erin Booker, Vice President of Behavioral Health and Social Care Integration, ChristianaCare
• John Donohue, Deputy Director, Department of Emergency Services
• Danielle Hornberger, Cecil County Executive
• Lauren Levy, Health Officer, Cecil County Health Department
• John Roush, Director of Student and School Safety, Cecil County Public Schools
• Dan Schneckenburger, Director of Administration, Cecil County Government
• David Trolio, Director, Department of Community Services
• Joe Zurolo, Assistant Administrator, Town of Elkton

“Addressing substance use disorder is critical to the health of Cecil County. I look forward to working with the Opioid Intervention Team, in partnership with community stakeholders, to guide countywide opioid response efforts,” said Health Officer Lauren Levy.

The OIT will have their first meeting in June and will host a public forum on the opioid crisis in July. A draft of the strategic plan is predicted to be completed by October 2021.

Opioid Intervention Teams (OITs) are set up in each of Maryland’s 24 jurisdictions and are multi-agency coordination bodies that work with community partners and integrate with the statewide opioid response effort. Cecil County’s OIT last met in November of 2019.
