Elkton, MD:  This week the Cecil County Council, by a unanimous vote (5-0), passed the FY 2022 Budget with an historic property tax cut benefiting Cecil County residents and business owners.

The FY 2022 Budget cuts the real property tax rate to $1.0279 per hundred dollars and the personal property tax rate for businesses to $2.5697 per hundred dollars, which represents a 1.3% reduction. This is the first time in the history of Cecil County charter government that property taxes have been cut.

“I wish to thank the members of the County Council for passing the FY 2022 Budget and helping me honor my campaign promise to cut taxes”, stated Executive Hornberger.  “Please know that this budget is just the first step in our mission of setting Cecil on a low tax path of economic growth and fiscal responsibility.”

“I also would like to thank Council President Bob Meffley for his leadership in passing the budget.  It certainly benefits Cecil County when elected leaders can work together for the common good”, Hornberger continued.

Highlights of the FY 2022 Budget include:

  • A new Domestic Violence Division within the Cecil County State’s Attorney’s Office.
  • Three new life saving vehicles for the Department of Emergency Services.
  • An increase to the Public School’s per student funding by 2.5% as well as financial assistance to fund a new School of Manufacturing Technology.
  • A new web-based portal that will afford citizens to better access Cecil County Government services.
  • A 9% increase to the Sheriff’s budget, which includes a salary increase and a new evidentiary room.
  • A new Internet Broadband position to help the County achieve 100% broadband coverage.
  • Capital Projects include the Belvidere Road Interstate 95 Interchange, upgrades to four bridges, a new Central Fuel Point, a new Paramedic Station, and the upgrade to Belvidere Road between Rt 40 and 95.

The 2022 Fiscal Year will begin on July 1, 2021.
