Lightning Strikes Port Deposit Home, Sparks Fire: Officials

The fire that caused $25,000 in damage to a vacant home in Port Deposit Wednesday night was attributed to lightning.

PORT DEPOSIT, MD — Lightning struck a home in Port Deposit Wednesday night, sparking a fire, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal. The home was vacant at the time, officials said, and nobody was injured.

Firefighters were called when a passerby noticed the blaze in the 100 block of Jackson Park Road at 7:25 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29.

The Water Witch Volunteer Fire Company responded, and officials said that about 35 firefighters brought the blaze under control in 20 minutes.

The fire was contained to the attic, according to authorities.

It began in the exterior of the two-story home, where the fire marshal said lightning struck the roof.

"The area experienced severe thunderstorms prior to the fire being discovered," the fire marshal said in a statement.

There was $25,000 in damage as a result of the blaze.
