Dundalk Man Extradited in Case of Stolen County Employees' Information

Courtney Calbert of Dundalk was arrested in Florida in October and waived extradition to Maryland.

A former Baltimore County contract employee suspected of stealing a computer hard drive containing Baltimore County government employees' personal information has been extradited from Florida to Maryland, according to Baltimore County police officials.

Courtney Calbert, 34, of the 8200 block of N. Boundary Road in Dundalk, was extradited to Baltimore County on Monday. He was arrested in Florida on an open warrant, according to the statement, and waived extradition.

Calbert was indicted by the Baltimore County State's Attorney's Office last spring and charged with 10 counts of theft and two related crimes, according to the statement.

Those charges date back to July 2012 and are unrelated to his possession of county employees' personal information. It was during the investigation of those alleged crimes that Baltimore County detectives discovered the theft of the Baltimore County hard drive and the information it contained.

While the initial investigation showed that Calbert possessed personal information, including employees' names, home addresses, Social Security numbers, salary rates and job classification, officials said they did not believe he had access to banking information.

But additional searches of the hard drive showed Calbert did have access to the individual checking account and bank routing numbers for 6,633 county employees, according to police.

They also found the personal banking data had been improperly copied from a county employee's work computer in May 2012. In the face of this breach of critical information, county officials have implemented new security measures and have immediately forbidden employees from downloading such personal information to their individual work hard drives, according to police.

At this stage of the investigation, detectives have not linked Calbert to using any of the information to steal the identity of any Baltimore County employees.

Calbert is being held at the Baltimore County Detention Center.
