Funeral Planned For Former Cabin John Park Fire Chief

James P. Seavey served the people of DC and Maryland for 30 years, even while fighting cancer.

POTOMAC, MD — Funeral arrangements have were announced Sunday for former Cabin John Park fire chief James P. Seavey, who died last Tuesday after a two year battle against Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Seavey's death was first announced on the Cabin John Park Volunteer Fire Department's facebook page, where a spokesperson said the department was "deeply saddened" by the loss. The department later shared an obituary on Facebook, lauding Seavey's life of service.

The lifelong firefighter began his career as a 16-year-old volunteer in the Glen Echo Fire Department in 1967. Through the years, he rose through the ranks and became Assistant Chief, the obituary reads. He moved to the Cabin John Park department in 1992 and held the position of Chief until his retirement in December 2017.

D.C. Fire and EMS also shared a post in memory of Seavey, who was first appointed to the department on May 27, 1986. He retired from the department in 2016, after almost 30 years of service.

Still, he remained Cabin John Park's fire chief until his retirement in 2017.

He was also a member of D.C. Fire Department's Emerald Society Pipes & Drums, where he was appointed Honor Guard Sergeant. The band shared several photos of Seavey in memorial.

Seavey's memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 14, at the Washington National Cathedral. A public reception will follow the memorial at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Rockville.
