An Introduction to the Bereavement Process

Chesapeake Life Center offers 'Understanding Grief,' a free informational session.

(LARGO, MD, JANUARY 11, 2016) — When a loved one dies, the first few weeks feel like a tidal wave of emotion and activity. Phone calls, funeral planning, money matters, a sudden family reunion and more all distract from dealing with the loss.

Then the phone calls stop. The rush of planning is over. And the feeling of loss kicks in.

Though grief is universal, it also is unique in each person. Get the facts about the process when Chesapeake Life Center offers “Understanding Grief,” a free informational session that will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, at its Prince George’s County office, 9500 Arena Drive, Suite 250, Largo, MD.

This 90-minute drop-in program will provide an overview of themes common to grief as well as the unique ways people may experience loss. It will be facilitated by Roberta Rook, a licensed clinical professional counselor with over 20 years of experience, with the past 14 years as a grief counselor and program coordinator for Chesapeake Life Center.

Rook said that the session is an opportunity for grievers to get an idea of where they are in the grieving process. “We want them to understand that grief is a process, its normal. We want to provide information so they can deepen their understanding of their own grief process,” Rook said. “Maybe it will help them decide whether or not a support group could help them.”
