Dangerous Heat Coming To Montgomery County: Weather Forecast

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — There may be no better time to take a dip in the pool than this coming Monday, because it is going to be incredibly hot in Montgomery County.

The entire D.C. region is about to get slammed by the hottest weather so far this year on Monday, and likely Tuesday as well, with temperatures shooting into the high 90s and the heat index being well over 100 degrees thanks to high humidity levels.

The National Weather Service says that a "southwesterly flow" over the region will bring in warm and moist air, resulting in temperatures 10 to 15 degrees higher than normal on Monday.

"High temperatures on Monday are expected to reach the mid to upper 90s for most locations, with heat indexes near a 100 degrees in the Shenandoah Valley, to around 105 degrees east of the Blue Ridge," the report states. "Low temperatures at night will be near 70 at higher elevations and in the mid to upper 70s east of the Blue Ridge."

Tuesday will start dry but a chance of showers increases through the day as a front moves in from the north. But those showers will help us cool off a bit from the oppressive heat.

The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang projects that highs will be pretty uniformly around 97-98 for the D.C. area on Monday, although Montgomery County could be a couple of degrees cooler. Dew points will reach the 70s, making things even more miserable.

Temperatures that are this high present a danger to people who will be out and about, particularly to the very young and very old. If you need to be outside, wear sunscreen, stay hydrated, and avoid over-exertion.

You'll start to feel the heat on Father's Day, as highs start to inch up into the high 80s and low 90s. Humidity could make it feel like 95 degrees. The current record for June 17 at Dulles is 92, so there's a chance we could set a record.

On Monday, CWG projects that highs will range from 94 to 99, and it could feel like up to 105 degrees.

"This may be the peak day of the heat wave," CWG says.

It could be a record-setting day for June 18 as far as temperatures go. The record is 97 in D.C. (1944) and 94 at Dulles (2007).

Tuesday won't be much better, with highs in about the same range and a top heat index of 105 once again. Fortunately, that approaching cold front will rescue us before the end of the day.
