ROCKVILLE, MD — A fast-casual Asian barbecue restaurant is now open at Rockville Town Square.

Located at 33 E. Maryland Ave., Friendship BBQ officially opened its doors on Sunday, Sept. 1 — and is the first of four Asian restaurants to set up shop in the mixed-use development.

Friendship BBQ serves skewered meats and seafoods using wood imported from the Xinjiang region of China, according to Federal Realty Investment Trust, the company that owns Rockville Town Square. The wood is supposed to give the dishes a unique flavor.

Friendship BBQ first opened in Manhattan. But, in recent years, owner James Du decided to move his operation to Rockville. His newest location pays tribute to the Big Apple through a graffiti mural.

"This type of BBQ is one surrounded and shared by friends. That's how I envision this restaurant," said Du. "We have designed it to incorporate art and environment into your dining experience."
