Heavy Rainfall, Thunderstorms May Snarl Evening Commute

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook warning for Montgomery County and much of the state during the Tuesday evening commute.

The warning says a cold front will bring showers and thunderstorms to the area.

Strong afternoon and evening thunderstorms can create an isolated threat for flash flooding and damaging wind gusts.

The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang predicts the storms will hit the Beltway around 3 p.m.

"Current thinking is that most likely window for storms is in the 3-5p window around the Beltway and District," CWG tweeted. "Outside chance of second wave 7-10p."

Locations that may be impacted by the thunderstorm include central and western Maryland, with the exception of Garrett County, as well as eastern West Virginia and northern and central Virginia.

Here's a detailed look at the forecast:

Tuesday Afternoon: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. High near 90. West wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Tuesday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely before 11pm, then a slight chance of showers between 11pm and 2am. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low around 68. North wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 84. Northwest wind around 8 mph.

Wednesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 65. North wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 85. North wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the afternoon.

Thursday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 67.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 87.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 70.
