How to Help a Child in Montgomery County Foster Care

Are you looking for a volunteer opportunity where you can make a real impact in the life of a child in Montgomery County foster care? Voices for Children Montgomery is looking for new volunteer advocates. Our spring training session starts April 10.


Voices for Children Montgomery is a nonprofit organization that provides professionally screened and trained volunteers who are appointed by the court to advocate for the best interests of children in foster care. Our mission is to train and support volunteer advocates for children in Montgomery County foster care to ensure their placement in safe, permanent homes. Our goal is to serve all children in Montgomery County foster care in need of a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer by 2026. A CASA volunteer makes contact with everyone in their assigned child’s life and writes a report to the court with recommendations as to the child’s best interests. These reports help judges make decisions to ensure children are safe and that their needs are met.


To become a CASA volunteer, one must meet the following criteria:

-Must be at least 21 years of age
-Must have the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to prepare court reports and communicate with professionals
-Make a minimum one-year commitment once assigned
-Be willing to donate 10-15 hours of service per month
-Complete a 40-hour training course
-Pass a background check including criminal, child abuse registry, sexual offender registry, and references
-Possess mature judgment, high degree of responsibility, and sufficient time to serve the best interests of the child
-Be able to relate to persons of different cultures, ethnic backgrounds and socioeconomic status

Note: To protect the health of both prospective CASA volunteers and Voices for Children Montgomery staff and guest trainers, all volunteer training sessions are currently being presented remotely.
